Riding a motorbike in the hills about one hour southwest of Chiangmai, Thailand I noticed a bunch of elephant in what looked like an aborted subdivision – a few short paved roads going into a pasture. We pulled a U-turn to check it out. There were about ten young men (I’m not sure if all …..
I just found this unpublished note – I thought that I had published it while I was in Tanzania. We were in Tarangire national park for about an hour when we spotted three cheetah, a mother and two younger cheetah, hanging out under a tree along the bank of theTarangire River. We spotted an impala …..
I shot this photograph just before sunset in February 2008, along Lake Ndutu in Tanzania – the sun was low and the air was very still so the sky was reflecting nicely off the lake. I used an an older camera, a Canon EOS Rebel XTi, that I had converted to shoot infrared by a …..

The leopard from an earlier post leaving its tree to go on a hunt in the central Serengeti near the Seronera river. This photograph was captured using a Canon EOS 40D and Canon EF 100-400mm lens.
While driving in the southern part of Tarangire N.P. there was another vehicle approaching us about 100 yards up the road. The vehicle stopped under a sausage tree – turns out one of the clients in the approaching vehicle asked the driver to get her a sausage fruit from the ground. You are not supposed …..
If you drive round the Seronera area of the Serenegti you are bound to run across a leopard – you may not get close to it but your are likely to see one. When we came across this leopard there was one other vehicle watching it ( I once counted over fifteen cars watching a …..
After three weeks in Tanzania I’m returning home. After 30+ hours of travel, I reached Richmond, Virginia Thursday night and will head to Oakland, California on Sunday afternoon. I’m off to Tanzania again, leaving tomorrow morning and returning home on October 13, with a stop in Richmond, Virginia on the way home for my high school reunion. I planned this trip myself with the help of friends in Tanzania – no middlemen or tour operators were inolved. I have a great itinerary that …..
This photograph was taken during the first day of my first trip to Tanzania. We spent the afternoon at Lake Manyara and saw this large male elephant off in the distance. We stopped, and he just continued walking towards us. This was taken at 100mm and the photograph is not cropped, so he was pretty …..
I met Lazaro Lekoyo during my first trip to Tanzania. Lazaro is a guide at one of the camps I stayed at – the MKSC Olduvai Camp. Lazaro is a Maasai warrior and managed to get himself into a private school in Arusha, Tanzania. On my last visit to Tanzania, we gave Lazaro a ride …..
Here’s a slideshow of photographs taken around the Lake Ndutu area in Tanzania. It is a rather large slideshow so it may take a while to load. Enjoy: http://www.royivankoe.com/lrflash/ndutugamedrive
While driving around Lake Masek (nearby Lake Ndutu) in Tanzania last February a guide told us that he just saw a leopard climb down from a tree on the other side of the lake. Since leopards are pretty rare, we drove over to the other side. We didn’t see the leopard so decided to wait …..

In the U.S., airports sometimes have trouble with birds or rabbits gathering on runways. They have the same issues in the Serengeti national park in Tanzania – only larger. I shot this photograph shortly before our departing flight was to arrive at the Lobo air strip in the Loliondo area. The elephants are right where …..
I’m back at Gibbs Far for my last night in Tanzania. I spent the last four night in the northern Serengeti – the first night in the Lobo area at Migration Camp, the next two nights at the Sayari Camp on the Mara River (the Tanzania/Kenya border), and the last night at Migration Camp.
A month ago or so I sold my camera and bought a new model. Yesterday, returning to the Migration Lodge in Lobo after visiting the Mara River area, my back pack (not a padded camera back pack) with camera fell out of the Landcruiser. I thought nothing of it. It probably fell eighteen inches and …..
I’ve been in Tanzania for a week now, arriving in Karatu last Sunday afternoon. Here are some random notes on the trip so far. I’ve wandered around Karatu, spent a very long day in Ngorongoro Crater, two full days game driving in Tarangire park, and an afternoon in Lake Manyara natiomal park. Other than that …..
I’m visiting Tanzania again, leaving on Sept. 21 – this is the trip that I postponed in June. I’ll be in Tanzania for two weeks before heading to Pune, India for work and then stopping in Bangkok for a couple of days before flying back to San Francisco. In Tanzania I’ll stay a number of …..
