These pictures were made at Lake Masek in the Ndutu area of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania. We saw a small herd of wildebeest on the shoreline opposite from us. We hung out, anticipating a crossing. Then a lion emerged from the weeds, maybe thirty meters from us, it crouched at waters edge, and anticipated a wildebeest crossing too, although her motives were different than ours. In the end everyone was fine, although the lioness went home hungry.
A small wildebeest herd contemplates crossing Lake Masek.
A lioness patiently watches the wildebeest herd across the lake.
Some of the wildebeest herd decides to cross Lake Masek.
As the wildebeest approach shore, the lioness looks for her best chance at a kill.
Close to shore, the wildebeest start walking.
The lioness lets larger and faster wildebeest run by while it targets a youngster.
At this point it looks ominous for the young wildebeest.
The lion is distracted by movement behind us.
The distraction was just enough for the young wildebeest to get away.
A disappointed lion.
